Eneco wanted to create a new value proposition for smart citizens, but struggled to identify a relevant need that fit its platform vision. Our discovery revealed a clear pain point in mobile energy access among flexible workers — a segment previously overlooked but increasingly reliant on portable power in everyday routines. OUTCOME The Eneco On The Go concept — a power bank rental service distributed through Eneco’s retail network — tested with strong adoption potential. Our prototype and validation work enabled faster alignment on MVP scope and reduced go-to-market ambiguity, helping accelerate internal decision-making and external rollout planning.

My Role Acted as a Service and UX Designer in the development of Eneco On The Go. I contributed to field research and insight synthesis to uncover energy-related pain points for flexible workers. Based on those findings, I helped define the service concept, designed the mobile app’s user experience, and created the visual identity of the new service. I also participated in key stakeholder presentations, helping articulate the design rationale and connect user insights to Eneco’s strategic platform goals. MAIN CHALLENGE: Design a platform-based service that empowers modern, smart citizens to rethink their relationship with energy — and explore how Eneco could expand its role in a platform-driven future. APPROACH: 1. Problem Framing We started by aligning with Eneco’s internal transformation vision. Through workshops with key sponsors, we identified core strategic priorities around becoming a platform-centric business. We then mapped key pain points for SMEs in the Dutch market that had high alignment with Eneco’s goals — and strong business potential. 2. User Research & Personas We conducted field research with flexible workers (freelancers, gig workers, remote professionals), observing and filming their daily routines. We investigated how energy use affected their productivity, stress, and movement throughout the city. This helped us surface unmet needs and behavioral insights that fueled concept development. 3. Concept Exploration & Vision After testing several service directions, we defined Eneco On The Go: A mobile, low-effort service helping flexible workers stay powered, connected, and stress-free. Users could rent power banks at Eneco’s partner micro-retailers — easily found via the app. The process of locating, unlocking, and paying for a battery was fully app-based, with no effort needed from store owners or staff. 4. Prototyping & User Validation We built interactive prototypes for the app, 3D mockups for charging stations and batteries, and even mapped the full customer experience — from onboarding to power bank return. We ran rapid user validation sessions to refine the journey and test real-world behaviors around the service. OUTCOME & IMPACT: • 90% of target users said they’d use the service if it were available today. • 80% would use the app to locate charging stations; 20% preferred help with unlocking on-site. • Users were willing to pay up to €2.70 per charge.
